On Wed., May 17, 2023 at 6 pm, Reel Sisters will present a literary and film tribute to moms in celebration of Mother's Day at Riverside Church Theater, 91 Claremont Ave. Actress Shantel Moses, a supermom, will moderate the film talk.

Award-winning producer/director Thomas Allen Harris and his mom Rudean Leinaeng will discuss his work-in-progress My Mom, The Scientist. Ms. Leinaeng, a chemistry professor and early STEM pioneer, will read from her book "Coal, War & Love: A Novel" and share the challenges she faced as a Black woman working in science.

Our celebration line up includes director Gabrielle Lansner's film I Am Not Ok, a powerful experimental short starring master dancer Pat Hall. The film is a bittersweet and loving dance representing the issues Black moms face in keeping their sons and daughters safe.

In Sarah Keeling's film Into My Life, Cassandra Bromfield's mom uses a Super-8 camera to capture her family's life growing up in the 1960s and 1970s in one of Brooklyn's largest cooperatives.

Souls directed by Malakai is a touching short film about a young girl coming to terms with her grandmother's Alzheimers' disease and declining health. Her grandmother is a ex-NASA scientist and shares a bond with her granddaugher in their love for science and the Cosmos.

Event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed! (Free magazine with $5+ donations).

Seating is limited, please RSVP in advance.
